Sump pump failure
A sump pump is the only appliance in the house that is allowed to do nothing for months and then required to work perfectly on the one afternoon the water table comes up. Most failures are discovered exactly then, which is why the pump that quits and the melt that tests it are really one subject.
Why pumps fail in spring specifically
The pit is quiet from November to March. Nothing cycles, nothing is tested, and three separate failures can develop unseen: a float switch that has stuck or fouled, a check valve that has seized, and (the Twin Cities classic) a discharge line that froze solid in January and never thawed. The pump itself may be fine; a pump pushing into a closed pipe floods the basement just the same, while sounding like it is working.
Age does the rest. A pump is a wear item with a service life, not an installation, and the pits under finished stairwells in the first-ring suburbs hold units that predate the carpet around them.
If the pit is overflowing right now
Check the simplest things in order. Power first: the outlet, the breaker, and the GFCI it may be plugged into. A tripped GFCI is the most common “failed pump” there is. The float second: lift it by hand and listen. If the pump runs but the water does not drop, the problem is downstream (a frozen or blocked discharge line), and running the pump harder will not open it.
If water has reached the finished area, the pump has become the second problem. Getting the water out and the drying started matters more than the repair, because the pump can be replaced next week and the wet carpet pad cannot wait that long.
The backup question
Every failed-pump basement restarts the same conversation: battery backup, water-powered backup, or a second pump. The honest framing is that the backup exists for two specific nights: the one when the power goes out in bad weather, and the one when the primary quits without warning. A house whose pit runs all spring is a house where that conversation is worth having before the next melt rather than after it.
Worth knowing before anyone arrives
- The pump runs constantly. Is that a failure?
- It is a warning. Constant cycling in a wet spring can be normal on clay ground, but a pump that short-cycles every minute usually has a float set too tight or a check valve letting water fall back into the pit. Both are fixable, and both are hard on the motor.
- The pump hums but nothing happens.
- Usually a seized impeller or a frozen discharge line. Cut the power rather than letting it hum: a stalled motor overheats.
- Does homeowner coverage apply to pump failures?
- Often only through a specific sump-and-sewer endorsement, and the distinction between pump failure and ground seepage matters to a claim. Photographs of the pit, the water line and the affected rooms before cleanup are worth taking in every case.
