Winter is the quiet threat. The frost line sinks well below the surface and grips whatever runs through that band of ground, most importantly the sump discharge line, which nobody thinks about because the pit under the house has gone silent. Inside, the coldest plumbing in the house sits where the framing meets the foundation, and a hard January snap finds the one run that was routed too close to that edge. The burst announces itself; the frozen discharge line does not, and it waits.

Then comes the melt. Months of snow become water over a stretch of weeks, the frozen ground refuses to absorb it, and everything the winter set up gets revealed at once: the pump that quietly aged out, the line that froze holding water, the grading that lets the yard drain toward the house. What the drying actually involves

Getting the standing water out is the short part. The long part is what stays behind in the materials: carpet pad that soaked, drywall that wicked above the visible line, insulation inside a finished wall, the cold cavity behind a built-in. Air movement and dehumidification pull that moisture out over days, and the schedule is set by readings (the wet material compared against the same material somewhere the water never reached), not by how the surface feels.

The judgment calls are about what dries in place and what comes out. Pad is nearly always a removal; carpet is often a save; drywall depends on what the water was and how long it stood. A finished wall over an old block foundation is the hard case, because it hides pockets that hold moisture long after every exposed surface reads dry. The reason the readings matter is what happens without them. A wall closed up damp does not stay a water problem. It becomes a mold finding, typically discovered in summer, far enough from the water event that nobody connects the two.
